Hands-On Clay

The Hands-on Clay workshop series is funded by a creative aging grant from Utah Arts and Museums. It is specifically designed for participants who are 55 years old and older.*
Suzanne Conine will teach the Hands-on Clay series. Suzanne is a skilled ceramic artist who creates beautiful pieces for dining and decoration in her home studio. Her work has been recognized in state and regional shows, and she was even commissioned by the Utah Division of Arts and Museums Collection for an installation in Washington County. Suzanne also had a successful 34-year career as an educator, teaching at Dixie High, Millcreek High, and the Waterford School. She loved sharing her knowledge and skills with her students and presenting workshops for local arts organizations, teacher accreditation, and university students.
Tile
February 18 - 21
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Experience the straightforward process of casting clay tiles using plaster. This includes carving lines in the plaster and pressing wet clay into molds to create multiple copies of the original tile. The tiles are then dried, bisque-fired and glazed. The glazes will pool in the areas between the relief lines in the clay, allowing for clean color separation. Additional experience with tile includes working with commercial tiles that will be glazed after exploring repetition as a design concept.
Figure Sculpture
March 31 - April 3

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Sculpt individual features such as the eyes, nose, and lips to create a mask-like product. Select a reference image of a head. Sculpt a 3D head approximately 6 inches tall. Finish the features, add hair, and create the neck and shoulders, ensuring hollowing out the piece.
Slab Pottery
May 12 - 15
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Register Today!
Create designs using paper and tape to form patterns that will be transferred onto tar paper templates, which will then be applied to wet clay slabs. Once the clay reaches a leather-hard stage, remove the tar paper and add embellishments. Finally, dry the pieces, bisque fire them, and apply a glaze.
*If you are interested in attending one of the workshops but are under 55, please email [email protected] to express your interest in the workshop(s) and join a waiting list if the class does not fill with older participants.
